$850,000 grant for oval upgrade

Price Oval will receive an $850,000 upgrade after a grant from the Department of Sport and Recreation.

Shire of Ashburton acting chief executive Frank Ludovico welcomed the money which was “part of a cocktail of funding” being used to upgrade the town’s entire sporting precinct.

“The other funding bodies have funded a new pavilion and that’s currently being constructed at this very moment,” he said.

“We are going to have a new pavilion, a new playing surface and the whole project will just be of exceptional quality.”

Mr Ludovico said some of the facilities in the region needed a revamp.

A good playing surface was essential to allow sports to flourish,” he said.

“We’re actually going to create a second area where it’s a training facility, so we can manage the amount of use the grass surfaces get so we can keep it at a high quality all the time.”

Mr Ludovico described sport in the Pilbara as the glue that holds things together.

“Being involved in sporting groups and sporting clubs and participating in an activity together is very important for community development, so having a great surface and great facilities is just part of helping the community continue to develop and become more cohesive,” he said.

A number of sporting groups use the oval.

If everything runs to schedule the pavilion is expected to be completed by August.
