The Hood win battle for grant
Hedlands's premier hip-hop crew, The Hood, were presented with a $10,000 grant from Telstra recently.
The group were one of 100 successful recipients from more than 1200 applicants across Australia to be awarded a grant to help disadvantaged children better access technology.
Telstra area general manager WA north Tony Carmichael said the Telstra Foundation had been overwhelmed by the response.
“As people increasingly go online for both business and social purposes, the consequences of not being connected become much more profound,” he said.
“Telstra’s view is that access is fundamental and as an organisation we are determined to help people develop skills and capability to go online and stay safe and protected while doing so.”
Hood co-ordinator Tim Turner, aka B-Boy Bling, said the grant would be used to buy a laptop and video camera, to create a multimedia unit.
“We are hoping to create a Pilbara hip-hop network next year, so this will help us connect with other communities,” he said.
Mr Turner said it was exciting to receive the grant as Hedland could now become part of an international network
