Soaring temperatures in the Pilbara have seen a catastrophic fire warning issued for a number of towns in the region.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services upgraded the bushfire alert for Port Hedland and coastal areas in the Shires of Ashburton, Roebourne and East Pilbara this morning.

A department spokesman said the strong winds and high temperatures were the worst conditions for grass and bushfires, with temperatures expected to hit 40 in Roebourne and 38 in Port Hedland.

An extreme fire danger warning remains in place for inland parts of the Shire of East Pilbara and Town of Port Hedland.

Residents in at-risk areas are advised to stay alert and watch for signs of smoke and flames.
