Father’s faith holds a ring of truth

Losing a ring on Cable Beach is not unheard of in Broome – neither is finding it again. But finding it without a metal detector or digging, just days later, is perhaps a little more of a special circumstance.

Leigh Zuvich said it must have been his lucky day when he found his newlywed son’s wedding ring in the same spot they had been surfing earlier that week.

Broome teacher Simon and his wife Christine Zuvich were married on Saturday, June 2, at Broome Surf Club.

Simon Zuvich and his father went surfing on the Tuesday at Cable Beach, when the newlywed husband Simon noticed the ring had slipped off his finger into the 2.5m metre swell, and diving down to find it was to no avail.

But Leigh Zuvich said while his son dived to find the ring he had taken a gauge of where they were, and he had a hunch he could recover it later, when the tides allowed.

“My son’s saying ‘you’ll never find it’,” Mr Zuvich said.

“But I went back on Sunday.” A woman stood in the exact spot he guessed the ring might be, and when he told her what he was looking for, she looked down and exclaimed she could see something.

“I told her if it’s a ring and it says Simon and Christine on it, it’s mine – if it doesn’t, it’s yours,” he said.

“It was mine. Her name was Sue but I didn’t stop to talk to her, I just ran off with it! “I think he (Simon) had thought I was a bit stupid to try and look for it, but you’ve got to have faith, don’t you.”
