Next phase for centre project

The next step of a plan to turn a vacant Middleton Beach lot into a vibrant, mixed-use centre has launched, with the State Government opening registrations of interest from developers this week.

A 1.3ha lot at the site of the old Esplanade Hotel on the Middleton Beach waterfront has been vacant since the hotel was demolished in 2007.

Last year, the State Government purchased the lot for $7 million.

Lands Minister Terry Redman said approaching the market for registrations was the next phase in delivering a new activity centre and visitor destination at the iconic beach.

"This is one of those rare opportunities for developers to invest in a true beachfront project that will be transformational for the community and tourism in the Great Southern region," he said.

Since its purchase last year, LandCorp has carried out community and stakeholder consultation with a public survey showing 90 per cent of the 212 respondents would support tourist accommodation at the prime site.

Mr Redman said a preferred development concept plan was being created, which will align community expectation with the needs to private developers.

Albany MLA Peter Watson said he was glad to see the project moving forward.

"We will be glad when it's done, and the sooner the better," he said.
