More sharks sighted off Albany coast

Cheyne Beach when it was closed last December after a fatal shark attack.

There have been two shark sightings off the Albany coast today.

A 4m white pointer was reported to Surf Life Saving WA at 9.36am about 100m off Cheyne Beach and a separate sighting of a 4m white pointer shark was lodged at 9.40am 100m off Hassell Beach.

Department of Fisheries also tagged and released a 2.4m whaler shark 1km off Limestone Head about 11.40am.

Albany teenager Jay Muscat was killed when he was attacked by a white pointer shark while spearfishing with his mate Matt Pullella at Cheyne Beach last December.

Yesterday, Middleton Beach was closed for three hours after a large tagged tiger shark was detected by a satellite-linked receiver at Ellen Cove.

The Department of Fisheries said people in the area of the sightings should keep an eye on the Surf Life Saving WA Twitter page and the Shark Smart website for updates.

Shark sightings should be reported to Water Police on 9442 8600.
