Albany school comes out tops
Albany Senior High School cemented its reputation as a premier institution last week, taking out top honours for public and private country schools across the State.
ASHS ranked 27th in the top 50 table of Western Australian Certificate of Education schools, compiled based on students achieving an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank score of 75 or above, which was released on Thursday.
The school led seven other country schools — Australind Senior High School, Margaret River Senior High School, Bunbury’s Cathedral Grammar School, Manea College and Catholic College, Manjimup Senior High School and Busselton’s Georgiana Molloy Anglican School — which also made the cut.
Deputy principal Graeme Bell said he was pleased for the school community and its students.
“The reason I think we have done well is our student services and advisors have ensured the students are in courses which match their aspirations and allow them to achieve their potential,” he said.
“We have a team of experienced teachers who put in a lot of effort out of school hours.
“This confirms we are doing things that are working.”
Long-time principal Peter Havel was also pleased with the result.
“I think it is important to have a school curriculum conducive to learning,” he said.
“You have to get kids into courses which match their ability, aspirations and work ethic.”
Students contributing to their former school’s high ranking included head boy Reyne Hordacre, Taylah Sawers, Vaughn Schoof, Hayley Terpstra and Ben Riley.
WA College of Agriculture Denmark placed 34th in the top 50 Vocational Education and Training schools, with Great Southern Grammar taking out 45th place.
