High five a record for Emu Point

Shane Sascha played men’s singles for Denmark.

Emu Point Tennis Club was crowned the region’s champion club for 2014, defending last year’s title and claiming the honour for a record fifth time on Sunday, April 6.

The club’s team took on players from Lawley Park, Merrifield Park, Mt Barker and Denmark tennis clubs in the Lower Great Southern Tennis Association’s Champion of Champions tournament.

Competing in men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles, Emu Point secured three of the five titles to claim a convincing overall win, breaking the deadlock with Merrifield Park, which has won four champion club titles.

Glen Thompson won the men’s singles title for Emu Point, going through the day undefeated but not without some resistance from Mt Barker’s Aaron Crofts, who lost to Thompson in two marathon sets 6-5, 6-4.

Emu Point’s Nathan Watson and Vince Hilder dominated the men’s doubles, winning all their matches without losing a set.

Alan Crook and Fran Ingram then ensured Emu Point would claim the overall championship by winning the mixed doubles event, losing just one set to the Lawley Park pairing of David Foreshaw and Anne-Marie Horwitz.

Maddie Crofts won the women’s singles event for Mt Barker, defeating defending champion Michelle Cook in the final round.

Both went into the match undefeated and drew at one set all, forcing the game into a match tiebreaker to decide the title winner.

Lawley Park’s Mary Harma and Jenny Rickerby won the women’s doubles title for their club after Merrifield Park’s top seeds Sam Capararo and Eileen Bairstow were forced to withdraw in the first round after Bairstow strained her calf.
