Denmark festival celebrates Great Southern taste

Oyster and reisling lovers will have a reason to celebrate when the annual Taste Great Southern festival is launched at Denmark this weekend.

Award-winning Great Southern chef Dan Sharp will cook up a storm at the inaugural Oyster and Reisling Festival, which will launch the 2013 Taste events.

Held at Forest Hill winery, Mr Sharp said he hoped the launch would give Albany oysters the attention they deserve.

“Albany oysters are smaller and creamier. They have a different flavour compared to other types,” he said.

Known for converting oyster haters into oyster lovers, Mr Sharp believes Taste 2013 will highlight the unique local produce of the Great Southern region.

“It is important to promote the produce of the Great Southern to both locals and tourists,” he said.

Chief executive of Great Southern Tourism Events Justine Nagorski said she was looking forward to launching this year’s Taste festival.

“Oysters marry well with riesling and the festival continues the 2012 celebrations of 40 years of riesling,” Ms Nagorski said.

“The event gets the community excited about the food and wine of the region.”

The Great Southern Oyster and Reisling Festival will be from 10am to 6pm this Saturday.
