New Year babies for Albany mothers

There was double the reason to celebrate the arrival of 2013 for two Albany mothers who welcomed their babies into the world early on New Year’s Day.

It had been anything but a low-key New Year’s Eve for new mother Rochelle Arends and father Troy Brown.

Their little boy Detroy Jamahl Arends was the first bub to be born at Albany Hospital in 2013, arriving at 3.35am on January 1.

Detroy will grow up sharing a birthday with Greta Ingrid Marie Cooper.

Young Greta surprised her parents Alexandra and Martin Cooper when she arrived two weeks earlier than expected at 6.45am.

It was a scramble to the hospital for the Coopers, with a neighbour coming to the rescue to look after their 15-month-old daughter Marlene at the last minute early on Tuesday morning.

Mrs Cooper’s mother then arrived by plane from Germany at lunchtime to take up grandmother duties.
