Desperate search after house fire

Police are searching desperately for an Albany man after his home was destroyed by fire early yesterday.

Last night, police were unable to find the resident, who did not own the property, and were speaking to his relatives about whether he was somewhere else before forensic experts began a painstaking search of the fire-ravaged Knapp Street property.

Firefighters searched the residence soon after putting out the blaze and did not find any human remains.

But police fear the intensity of the fire, which caused the home to collapse, may have incinerated anyone caught inside when it was destroyed about 7am. It is not known what started the fire.

Arson squad investigators believe a fire which caused $300,000 damage to a West Perth unit was accidental.
