City prioritises 'iconic' events

The City of Albany has identified four “iconic events” it will provide priority support to as part of this year’s budget.

Anzac Day, the Albany Motor Classic, the Great Southern leg of the Perth International Arts Festival and the Albany Show and Trade Exhibition will all receive funding as iconic events.

City of Albany Mayor Dennis Wellington said the list took into account community feedback.

“The council is called on to support a wide range of events every year,” he said. “Identifying the events which best meet the needs of our community enables council to prioritise the events most deserving of council support.”

Mr Wellington said council support of the events would include cash funding and the loaning of equipment and City staff support.

“An excellent example of this is the Albany Motor Classic, to which the council has allocated $10,000 for 2013,” he said.

“For the 2012 event, council also provided $2198 for concrete safety barriers and equipment essential to the race, plus trucks and labour, road sweeping before and after the race, administrative assistance and technical advice with the traffic management plan and installing road blocks.”

Events which will also be supported include Australia Day, Proclamation Day, Volunteers Week, the US Submariners Commemoration, NAIDOC Week and Christmas and New Year’s Eve festivities.
