Long-serving City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder chief executive Don Burnett has resigned, and will officially depart the position in August.

The City announced this morning that Mr Burnett would depart after nine years in the job, after council accepted his resignation at last night's ordinary meeting.

Mr Burnett said it was the right time for him to step down.

"With my contract expiring in March next year, and an election coming up this October, it is a good time to let the Council select a new CEO," he said.

Mr Burnett has overseen a number of key projects and initiatives during his time in the job, although his often-combative approach has drawn criticism from a number of key stakeholders in recent years.

"My only regret is the unfinished business the City has with the State Government.

We need to get them to acknowledge the needs of the City and provide appropriate Royalties for Regions (R4R) funding," Mr Burnett said today.

"There is no doubt the State Government thinks that the City doesn't need any real consideration, with nominal funding provided to the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, particularly when compared to the tens of millions directed to other local governments."

He said the recent collapse of a business case for a community hub based at the Kalgoorlie Golf Course was a key case in point.

Mayor Ron Yuryevich praised Mr Burnett for his contribution to the City, with the search for an eventual replacement likely to begin immediately.
