Giants aim for the hat-trick

Goldfields Giants coach Michael Haney says his team needs to respect their opponents when they face off against the Kalamunda Eastern Suns at the Brookman Street Stadium tonight.

The Giants picked up their first home win last week against the Cockburn Cougars 110-102, and will be seeking their first three-game winning streak since the 2013 season.

However, they must get past the Suns, who beat the local squad in round 1, 92-87, after the Giants gave up a late lead following a season-ending injury to captain Lordan Franich.

Kalamunda have won just one game since, beating the Perth Redbacks 102-99 last week, but Haney said the memory of the opening round defeat was still fresh in the team's memory.

"We owe them a little bit, we had that game and it's one of those games you can't get back, but wish you could," he said.

"That game definitely gives us a little motivation, but we're on a roll, but we also have something to prove so it will work both ways for us."

The Suns field a very inexperienced line-up, with 21-year-olds Seva Chan and Jarrod Holmes serving as coach John Triscari's key Australian players.

Both players have stepped up, more than doubling their career averages, complementing the American duo of Lien Phillip and Kevin Anthony.

However, Haney said he was looking for his side to take advantage of the Suns' depth while restricting their main scoring avenues.

"They are not the deepest team, but they do call on their bench players to do a job," he said.

"They're very well coached, but they are obviously struggling for a reason - they don't have a lot of firepower outside of Chan and their Americans.

"We have to do a good job of limiting them, similar to Cockburn, and making their role players beat us."

The Giants had a light week on the training track after a virus went through the playing group, made worse by a number of soft tissue injuries to key players.

But Haney expected his squad to be fit when they lined up tonight and said the Brookman Street faithful could expect an energetic team tonight.

"We had a few injuries for the first time this week, ankles and sickness, so we had a bit of a light week, but the boys are sharp and fresh," he said.

"We've scouted them pretty heavily, so hopefully we'll get off to a good start, get the crowd behind us early and build from there."
