Dancers follow a dream

Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s talented Highland dancers are hoping to represent the region in an international competition later this year, but they need the community’s support.

Eastern Goldfields Highland Dancing Association plans to send 10 dancers to compete in the ninth annual International Highland Dancing Festival in NSW in July.

The association is hoping to raise $10,000 to cover flights and accommodation for each of the dancers, some of whom are as young as six.

Fundraising co-ordinator and parent, Caroline Todd, said the group would not only be representing the State but the Goldfields-Esperance region as well.

“They are very excited to be representing the region against the rest of the country and some international dancers as well,” she said.

“There is a zone aggregated award, which is awarded to the zone with the most points over the entire event, so the girls would love to do well for the region.

“This competition would be a great learning experience for them because most of these girls compete only locally and maybe Perth.”

More than $2500 has already been raised through sausage sizzles, chocolate sales, raffles and online donations.

Ms Todd said some families had multiple children wanting to compete. “One family has three daughters who want to go over and another has two, so it is quite a large expense for them,” she said.

Donations can be made to the GoFundMe campaign, www.gofundme.com/lswfh4.

The association will also be holding its annual Goldfields Premiership Competition on March 21 at the Kalgoorlie Town Hall.
