Esperance farmers eye egg-cellent opportunity

A plot is hatching to bring freshly laid eggs from Esperance to Kalgoorlie-Boulder within the next year.

Esperance Eggs co-owners Sally Roworth and Billy-Joe Greasley have been running their egg farm, about 10km outside of Esperance, for a year.

Ms Roworth said the couple, who supplied the Esperance, Ravensthorpe and Caiguna area, did not want to put all their eggs in one basket and were looking at Kalgoorlie-Boulder as an expansion point.

But Ms Roworth said they wanted to make sure they were producing enough eggs to meet demand before committing to the move.

“We’re basically waiting to build up to the point where we can supply,” she said.

Esperance Eggs produces between 2000 and 2500 eggs a day and has an additional 1000 hens on the way.

While keen on a possible Kalgoorlie-Boulder expansion, Ms Roworth said demand for the eggs was continually increasing in Esperance and surrounding areas.

“We’re finding that every month we’re reviewing it and it’s increasing monthly,” she said.

Despite the increasing demand, Ms Roworth said Esperance Eggs was aiming to start supplying the Kalgoorlie-Boulder market within 12 months.

Before cracking into the egg business, Ms Roworth worked in administration, while Mr Greasley was a stonemason.

Ms Roworth said the couple were confident in the future of free-range eggs, with fast-food outlets and supermarket chains responding to customer demand for the product.
