Police have urged travellers to be careful on the roads as hundreds of holidaymakers prepare to converge on Esperance for the Easter long weekend.

The Shire of Esperance has advised visitors who cannot find accommodation at caravan parks to not camp illegally in carparks around the town centre or along the coast.

The number of visitors arriving has steadily increased during the week, with the town getting busier, with more expected to arrive today and tomorrow.

Esperance police Senior Sergeant Ricky Chadwick said Easter was one of the busiest periods in the year for road users.

"We urge drivers to take a moment to consider their friends, family and others," he said.

"Fatigue, speed, impaired and distracted driving are the leading causes of crashes and locally, police will have a large presence on the roads targeting poor driving behaviour this Easter."

Snr Sgt Chadwick said it was important that people travelling long distance had a good night's sleep before heading off and stopped regularly for breaks on their journey to reduce fatigue.

"Don't be tempted into taking risks when trying to overtake slow moving vehicles, be patient and wait for a safe section of road to pass," he said.

Double demerit points will be in force over Easter from midnight tonight to midnight next Monday, April 21.

Esperance Chamber of Commerce events and marketing co- ordinator Tori Castledine said Easter always provided a welcome boost to the local economy.

"We anticipate that this Easter will be another strong tourist season especially with some nice weather forecast. We hope that everyone has a safe and happy Easter and enjoys some quality time with friends and family,"she said.

Shire president Malcolm Heasman said the local authority would be tackling illegal camping over the coming weeks.

Mr Heasman said offenders could receive a $100 on-the-spot fine.

Shire rangers will be conducting patrols over the holiday period.

Overflow camping space has been provided at the Greater Sports Ground.
