Massivo comes up trumps in feature race

Goldfields trainer Rob Brown launched the local racing season in style with Massivo's all-the-way win in the feature, the $17,500 Bluescope Distribution Handicap (1100m), on Saturday.

The Helen Harding-trained Donnyonetime had gone out a $2 favourite, but was relegated to third behind Massivo (Natasha Faithfull; $5) and Delray Beach (Kevin Bohorun; $9).

Massivo's win followed two solid trials, punctuated by a win and second, leading up to the new Goldfields campaign. Also on Saturday, Peter Fernie got his bid for a seventh consecutive leading trainer award underway with a double.

Fernie opened the program with the Shelby Bowtell-ridden Zee Dribber ($4) notching a three-quarter length victory over Paths of Victory, which ran on strongly from sixth at the turn. The $2.50 favourite, If The Slipperfits, was fifth.

Fernie was also successful in the Malec Pneumatic Services Handicap (1200m) with Don't Tempt Me. Emma Stent piloted the gelding to a neck victory over I'm A Natural and followed up in the last aboard the Pat Bermingham Jnr-trained Grey Jabiru.
