Call for community support

The caretaker of the Hannans North Tourist Mine, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines, has said the tourism venture needs community support to be successful.

The old Australian Prospectors and Miners Hall of Fame, which had a number of tourist attractions, was officially opened at a community open day on Sunday.

The event was hailed as a success after 1500 people ventured onto the grounds to enjoy the day.

KCGM has reopened the tourist mine as caretaker but has repeatedly said it does not want to run the facility in the long-term but wants to hand it over to a community group.

KCGM manager of environment and social responsibility Michelle Berryman said the company would plan the future of the tourist mine over the next year.
