Funds for future of the region

City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Mayor Ron Yuryevich has flagged that Goldfields councils will seek Government funding for projects aimed at the future of the region, which could be worth as much as $150 million.

But he has made it clear these funds would be for the Goldfields 2020 plan and would be separate from its bid for the $150m Goldfields Revitalisation Fund.

Mr Yuryevich, who chairs the Goldfields Voluntary Regional Organisation of Councils, made up of the nine local governments in the Goldfields including Esperance, said he was awaiting the reply from the parties for their position on the Goldfields Fund.

GVORC maintain that the $150m should be used for projects identified in the strategic development plan for the regions and not other “pet projects”.

“We are going to wait on their answers to see what they say, ” Mr Yurevich said.

“That’s the whole point of my letter is that this has been developed through local government through our regions.

“It is important to us. We have Nationals tick-off, we have the Premier (Colin Barnett) acknowledging and looking at those projects, and agreeing.”
