New Zealand spirit on display

About 500 people, mostly of New Zealand descent, flocked to Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s Kingsbury Park yesterday to enjoy the celebration of Waitangi Day.

The day recognises the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between Maoris and English settlers on February 6, 1840.

It has been a public holiday in New Zealand since 1974 and the treaty has become what many people consider as the founding document of the country.

At the sun-soaked park, people were treated to a number of different stalls while many others just sat on the grass to enjoy the music and performances coming from the stage.

One of the performances included the local band NBA Rastaz with tunes showing their fusion of reggae and rock.

One of the organisers of the event, Wania Taiepa, described it as “a good family day”.
