Compulsory pre-primary starts today

The 2013 school year starts today and marks the beginning of compulsory pre-primary education for all students.

The new law means children turning five this year will begin their education and students will now undergo 13 years of compulsory schooling.

Department of Education Goldfields regional director Ken Perris said parents would have enrolled their students in their local intake schools after the announcement was made.

Education Minister Peter Collier said pre-primary education was a vital step in children’s learning where they acquired foundation skills and became used to the routine of school life.
