Weather records tumble in Leonora

This week’s extreme heatwave saw Leonora record its hottest temperature to date, smashing a 56-year-old record.

The Northern Goldfields town recorded a temperature of 49C on Wednesday, beating its previous hottest recorded temperature of 47.8C.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder Bureau of Meteorology station manager Steven Black said Monday was when temperatures started to rise.

“On Monday we recorded 47.8C for Leinster, which was equal with its hottest ever previous day and that same day Laverton aerodrome recorded 46.5C and Leinster aerodrome 46.5 – all three of those were the hottest recorded days for those sites,” he said.

“Tuesday was when we really stepped it up a gear and started breaking records, with Leonora townsite and aerodrome recording 48.3C.”

In Leonora’s case it didn’t stop there, with the record broken again on Wednesday with a temperature of 49C – the hottest recorded in WA this week.
