Grocery delivery trial for Laverton
The Shire of Laverton is considering trialling a $9000-a-month grocery delivery service for residents.
The remote Northern Goldfields town’s fluctuating population of several hundred has been without a groceries provider since ongoing power problems caused the closure of the supermarket in May 2011.
The nearest supermarkets are 124km and 360km away in Leonora and Kalgoorlie-Boulder respectively.
Shire chief executive Steven Deckert said the service would consist of a hired freezer truck and a casually employed or volunteer driver, making a trip to Kalgoorlie-Boulder Woolworths once a week to collect a consignment of groceries ordered online.
He said residents without internet access would be abled to use computers at the Community Resource Centre and buy pre-paid credit cards for online purchases.
He said he expected the town would have a new supermarket within two or three months, following positive discussions with potential opera- tors over the Christmas holiday period.
