The corridors in the house may be a little wider than normal and the rack of Play Station 3 titles may be a little better stocked, but Jake Jamison’s bedroom looks perfectly ordinary.

There is a Bart Simpson sign on the door. There is a statuette of Michael Jackson circa the album Dangerous.

There is a flatscreen television. Jake’s family noticed something was wrong when he began walking on his tip-toes at four years-old, his mum Karen Raynes said.

The podiatrist referred him to a neurologist and he was diagnosed with a disease called Duchenne muscular dystrophy, meaning the body does not produce the protein dystrophin. The muscles wouldn’t build – they just deteriorated.

Recently Karen has found advertised on the internet a second-hand automated reclining bed and aims to raise the funds to buy it.

It would allow Jake to be more comfortable, she said. Karen has requested that anybody willing to donate towards the $5000 cost of the bed contact her on 9022 9784.
