For a competitor with less than two months remaining until the Rottnest Channel Swim, the festive season can be a dangerous period for excessive eating and drinking and a drop in training.
However, for Goldfields swimmer Bill McKenzie, the Christmas and New Year phase can be celebrated accordingly.
The 59-year-old, who will be attempt his 11th solo crossing this year, said his focus was purely about finishing rather than racing the clock – allowing himself to enjoy the holiday break. “At my age it (dieting) doesn’t make any difference at all,” McKenzie said.
“I do whatever I want so at this time of year I can behave normally – whatever normal is. I’m not an elite athlete so I’m not trying to win the race.
“These days the aim of the game is to get there.”
