Future of arts centre undecided

The State Government cannot say exactly when it will make a decision on the future of the Goldfields Arts Centre.

Premier Colin Barnett has previously said it was working towards a solution and would make a decision after an internal report was completed looking at all arts centres in regional Western Australia. The report was expected by the end of 2012.

The Kalgoorlie Miner yesterday asked the Government for an update on the situation.

“Generally speaking, the State Government does not manage regional arts venues, ” Culture and Arts Minister John Day said in a written statement. “However the State Government is exploring a range of options for the future funding and management of major regional venues across the State.

“The review is in the process of being finalised by the Department of Culture and the Arts. The review looks at numerous regional arts centres, not only Kalgoorlie, and has needed to take into account their unique operating structures and different maintenance/structural requirements.

“As you would appreciate, this is a large body of work and there is a need to be precise in determining exactly what is required before making a decision."
