Man admits role in hit-and-run

An 18-year-old man will be sentenced in the Kalgoorlie District Court next year after he admitted he was the driver in a hit-and-run death.

Darren Patrick Polak appeared via video link to the Kalgoorlie Magistrate’s Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to dangerous driving occasioning death, despite previously saying he would contest the offence.

This follows court hearings spanning two months following the accident that left Hans Nieber, 63, in a Perth hospital fighting for his life.

Mr Nieber was walking to his home with his wife when he was hit by a green Holden Commodore on the Goldfields Highway at 7.25pm on September 14.

The victim died in hospital a few weeks after the accident.
