Feral cats a big problem

The owner of a cat haven in Esperance has called on residents to be more responsible when owning cats.

This comes after the Shire of Esperance said there had been a recent increase in feral cats roaming the town.

Sue Mayfield, who runs Sue’s Cat Care and Adoption in Esperance, has received more than 150 cats this year and described it as “her busiest” since opening the haven about six years ago.

Mrs Mayfield cares for 44 kittens and 12 adults in her “cattery” in the backyard of her Esperance home.

Along with the Shire of Esperance and local veterinarians, Mrs Mayfield has been trying to educate the community on cat ownership. She said people should get all their cats desexed and microchipped.

“It is disappointing and sad,” Mrs Mayfield said. “People do not think about the consequences of having a pregnant cat.
