The Department for Child Protection has dismissed as “inaccurate” the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s view that it was not informed about works to replace the Graeme Street Hostel.

The Kalgoorlie Miner reported on Tuesday comments from mayor Ron Yuryevich that the council was unaware of the project until earthworks began to build a six-bedroom group home on Aslett Drive.

But this was rejected in a statement from DCP director general Terry Murphy who said they had twice met with the council with the earliest in May 2011.

In this meeting with the DCP, the Department of Finance’s Building Management and Works and the architect, Mr Murphy said they discussed “the project, talked through the plans and explained how the design of the home would complement the surrounding street landscape”.
