Collier defends indigenous education

Education Minister Peter Collier has defended the standard of indigenous education in WA, suggesting comments from Labor MP Ben Wyatt were "extremely insulting" to regional teachers.

Speaking at a conference at the University of Western Australia this week, Mr Wyatt called on the Government to deliver the same standards of education as offered in the metropolitan area.

But Mr Collier said it was unfair to the hardworking teachers, principals and support staff in regional schools to suggest the standard of education they deliver is lower than at Perth schools.

“The Government is by no means delivering a palliative education system to Aboriginal people in regional and remote areas,” he said.

“Regional schools, due to their distance from Perth, do have additional challenges when it comes to delivering quality education.”
