State award for local principal

Kalgoorlie Primary School principal Leonie Clelland was announced as the WA Primary Principal of the Year at the WA Education Awards in Perth yesterday.

Ms Clelland was praised for her hands-on approach to teacher development and for establishing programs aimed at improving education for younger children at the school.

She introduced an extra three hours of kindergarten instruction a week for students, so they can do three full days a week with targeted lessons in gross motor skills, science, library lessons, music and values education.

She has overseen a period of success during her four years as principal, marked by increased enrolment numbers and improved student performance data.

Her staff described her as a “passionate and dedicated principal with an infectious desire for excellence”.
