Homebirth myths dispelled

Women who have given birth in their homes have spoken up about their experience in an effort to dispel some myths about home-birthing in Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

One of these women, Hayley Lane, who had her son Teal earlier this year, described the experience as “empowering”.

She spoke to the Kalgoorlie Miner because she wanted to reassure women giving birth at home in Kalgoorlie-Boulder was a genuine option to be considered.

“Every woman has the right to come out of their birth experience feeling empowered and like it was the most amazing thing,” she said.

“It is not about home birth versus hospital birth, it is about letting the women of the Goldfields know they have a choice and will be supported in that choice. And it is not illegal.”

Less than one per cent of births in the State are at home with Goldfields women having less than the State average.
