Survivors tell their story in Fields Relay for Life

Cancer has done its best to destroy Marie MacDonald and her family.

The 55-year-old from Kalgoorlie has lost her father, brother and husband to cancer and now her sister and another brother have contracted the disease.

Mrs MacDonald has kidney cancer – she beat it once, but it came back and doctors gave her six to 12 months to live.

That was two years ago.

On Saturday, Mrs MacDonald was among about 50 people who completed the survivor lap at Boulder’s Digger Daws Oval as part of an emotion-charged start to the second annual Relay for Life.

Mrs MacDonald completed the lap with her husband’s photo gripped firmly in one hand as hundreds of Kalgoorlie-Boulder residents applauded her and other survivors.
