One of the 'worst' crashes of year

Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan has described the Southern Cross fatal traffic accident as “by far” one of the worst crashes of the year.

As a result of the accident, he is set to promote road safety messages and called on drivers to be more patient when driving on country roads.

Mr O’Callaghan was one of the motorists caught up in the road closure on Great Eastern Highway on Saturday morning and was delayed for about an hour.

He was making his way to Kalgoorlie-Boulder to attend the finale of the Chasing the Sun Golf Festival and again drove through the crash scene yesterday on his way back to Perth.

“When I went through there (yesterday) I was reflecting on what sort of messages we can give to the community,” he said.

Mr O’Callaghan said it seemed driver error had contributed to the “terrible crash”.
