Kalgoorlie police joined members of the public yesterday to remember fallen officers.

Officers throughout the country stopped for a minute’s silence to remember deceased colleagues and the dangers involved in their job as part of Police Remembrance Day.

Goldfields-Esperance District Inspector Martin Voyez said the high profile murders of Gold Stealing Detectives Alexander Pitman and John Walsh remained one of the most notable associations with the day for local police officers.

“I think one of important things is police are the community and the community are the police,” Insp Voyez said.

“Anything we do is because we are community members as much as police officers.

“So where police officers are seriously harmed or die in the course of their duty, it is because they are community members first and then police officers.”
