Boy killed in fire

A three-year-old boy has been killed as fire gutted his family's Boulder home.

The child was in the Piesse Street house with his parents yesterday when fire engulfed the property.

A frantic rescue attempt was mounted by the boy’s father and neighbours, but they were beaten back by thick smoke and high temperatures.

Neighbour Shaun King said he was inside his house with his partner when first alerted to the fire.

“I started smelling smoke … then my partner came running inside saying the house next door was on fire,” Mr King said.

“Myself and Jamie (another neighbour) grabbed hoses and tried to fight the fire as best we could.”

They were quickly joined by neighbours from surrounding houses, who attempted to hold the line before firefighters arrived.
