Barron shows support for centre
Renowned Australian comedian Carl Barron has given his support to the future of the cash-strapped Goldfields Arts Centre after sell-out shows on Friday and Saturday.
It was Mr Barron’s third appearance in Kalgoorlie-Boulder – his first time was as a support act for the Umbilical Brothers – and he performed his own show in 2006.
After finishing the tour for his A One Ended Stick show, Mr Barron plans on coming up with new material for another show. He said he planned to return to the Goldfields Arts Centre, if the venue remained open. “Tonight, I’m not joking, that was as good a crowd as I’ve played to anywhere, that reaction was just great,” Mr Barron said on Friday.
“I always want to come back to places when I can get a full house or two, it just feels better.”
The centre has been at the heart of a long-running stand-off between Curtin University, the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the State Government over its funding, leaving its future uncertain.
“For me I like to play in theatres, I started out in pubs so I’m not going to fly over to play in a pub,” Mr Barron said.
