Miner plans new book
Miner plans new book

A retired miner who spent 26 years working underground at Mt Charlotte is behind plans for a new book detailing the rich history of the Kalgoorlie gold mine.

Wayne Tekiwei Kara, 59, worked his last shift at Mt Charlotte last year after starting out as a crusher cleaner in 1983.

Mr Kara is in the initial stages of research for the book and is interested in interviewing former mine workers. “I’ve been thinking about this for three or four months,” Mr Kara said.

“At one stage it was the only operating gold mine in Kalgoorlie. There’s so many good stories to tell and I’d like to get people to tell their own stories.

“The old boys know a lot more than I do and they’re starting to get a bit older. I mentioned the idea to one of my old work mates the other day and he said, ‘you had better hurry up’.”
