Robert Hicks, the man behind the scenes of many of the Goldfields most significant projects, was thrust into the spotlight on Saturday night at the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Goldfields Business and Employee Awards.
Mr Hicks, who was named Goldfields Citizen of the Year, said he was humbled, honoured and a little embarrassed by the award.
“You don’t expect to pick up awards,” he said. “I am generally nominating other people for awards, but to get one yourself, you just don’t expect that.
“It came as a complete surprise.”
A fourth generation Goldfielder, Mr Hicks is renowned for his determination to attract families to Kalgoorlie-Boulder, a goal he pursues through his role as chief executive of the Goldfields-Esperance Development Commission.
He is also involved in a number of other community organisations including the Australian Family Association, the St Barbara’s Festival committee and the Small Business Centre Goldfields.
