The appearance of Young Australian of the Year Marita Cheng at last week’s Girls and Guys Exploring Mining Forum was hailed a major success by Goldfields Education Mining Industry Alliance chairman Darren Cooke.
Ms Cheng addressed 110 teenage girls from across the Goldfields last Friday in a bid to inspire them to walk different career paths.
The 23-year-old engineer from Melbourne was in Kalgoorlie-Boulder as a guest of the Chamber of Minerals and Energy, which says the number of women employed in the resource sector is 22 per cent.
It is still well below the national female participation rate across all industries of 42 per cent.
Last Friday’s audience at the Graduates Hall also included 103 teenage boys, with the students taken on tours of KCGM’s Super Pit and Kanowna Belle.
Mr Cooke, who is also Barrick Kanowna Belle’s geology manager, hoped the site tours and special guest speakers would inspire youngsters to consider a career in mining.
