Waste disposal costs set to rise
The cost of disposing waste at the Yarri Road refuse facility looks set to increase substantially when the Federal Government’s Carbon Tax is introduced next week.
The cost of disposing most categories of waste, including commercial waste, at the facility is around $31 per tonne.
But City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder mayor Ron Yuryevich said based on Federal Government estimates, charges at the Yarri Road facility may double.
Thirty-two of the country’s 559 councils were identified by the Clean Energy Regulator as being liable for the Carbon Tax, but Mr Yuryevich said shared tip facilities meant a number of other councils were likely to be caught by the legislation when it comes into effect on July 1.
“To say only 32 councils will be affected is just blatantly wrong,” he said.
The council previously voted to include $900,000 in its draft 2012-13 budget to investigate carbon reduction initiatives for the Yarri Road refuse site, with a methane burner understood to be the front-runner.
