Mining their studies

Kalgoorlie Primary School students got up close and personal with a Caterpillar 785C haul truck during a visit to Norton Gold Fields’ Navajo Chief open cut mine on Tuesday.

Drill and blast engineer Dean Siddons told the Year 1 pupils the truck was capable of hauling 150 tonnes of ore or the equivalent of about 3600 children.

Decked out in hard hats, the students were bussed to the Navajo Chief pit floor with a depth of about 70m, where they got the chance to see an excavator and reverse circulation drill rig up close. Teacher Jennifer Siddons said the school’s Year 1 classes had made learning about mining the theme for the term.
