Nine-year wait for public housing

The housing woes of Goldfielders in need show no signs of easing as public housing waitlists continue to grow.

There were 503 applications for public housing listed with the Department of Housing WA as at April 30, up from 485 applications in December 2011.

Cyril and Maureen Tucker have been on the Goldfields Indigenous Housing Organisation’s waitlist for the past nine years.

A grandparent and pensioner, Mr Tucker, 66, suffers from a number of medical conditions, including diabetes, chronic kidney disease and heart disease.

He and his wife live in Menzies, but must travel the 132km to Kalgoorlie-Boulder at least once a week for medical treatment.

Mrs Tucker said in the past seven months Mr Tucker had been hospitalised at least once a month.
