AFL legend talks goals
Mid West Clontarf Football Academy’s boys had lunch with Carlton premiership coach David Parkin last week.
Parkin was hosted by Durack Institute of Technology, as part of their Quality Week Professional Development Program.
He then visited the football academy and talked to the boys about life goals.
Heather Brett, lecturer and co-ordinator at the Midwest Football Academy, said Parkin encouraged the boys to have balance between football, work and life.
“He spoke to the boys about identifying what it was they wanted to achieve in life, how they could plan to achieve it, and taking responsibility for themselves,” Brett said.
“The amusing talk was filled with stories about current and past players.”
Parkin coached Carlton to three AFL Grand Finals and held aloft the prestigious premiership cup in 1995.
Brett said he referred back to his old coaching ways which made the Clontarf boys step back a bit.
“Only occasionally did he show signs of his old coaching style when he raised his voice and the veins in his neck started to pop out,” she said.
Brett said the boys that came to meet him could not wipe the smiles off their faces.
“The kids thought he was great, they were entertained by him and loved meeting a true AFL legend,” she said.
