Doble follows in father’s footsteps
Tahni Doble isn’t your average 20-year-old woman.
She is the only woman racing sprintcars in WA.
Racing’s well and truly etched in her pedigree — her father Mick, the president of Geraldton City Speedway, is a massive rev head and has been racing since he was 1
Doble started racing in juniors when she was 11 and rose to seniors six years later.
She took a sprintcar wheel for the first time in 2013 and only raced in four meetings, finishing third in the Midwest Championships.
Last weekend she got her first silver in Pithara and now turns her focus to the Mid West Auto Group Demolition Derby tomorrow evening.
“I had a blast, ” she said.
“It was just a heat, but it was still so exciting.
“I’ve never raced at that track before so it was good to get over there.”
Doble said she couldn’t wait to get out on the track as a youngster.
With her dad racing sprintcars for as long as she could remember, she said she wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps.
“I always wanted to race sprintcars, ” she said.
“I’m building my confidence, and with confidence comes speed.
“I’ve been going out to the speedway since I was very young and I always wanted to do it.”
Doble also raced at Kwinana and Bunbury this year.
She said she would love to get a podium finish, and her goal was to finish in the top five in sprintcars at the State Championships.
“I know Dad is going to expect me to pay for it sooner or later, so I’m going to have to get a better job I think, ” she said.
Despite it being the last meet of the season, tomorrow’s program will be a bumper, with races starting at 3pm and the Derby starting at 7.30pm.
Doble’s advice to women thinking about racing is “definitely do it” and she admits to being a role model for other female drivers.
“It’s the best feeling ever, ” she said.
“Being the only girl in it, I feel like a role model to the other girls.
“When girls come and ask for signatures, it’s just a great feeling.
“You get them in the car, and they take photos — it’s so amazing.”
