Buccs too good for Suns’ heat
The S&K Electrical Contracting Geraldton Buccaneers will go into their double-header this weekend full of confidence after their comfortable 30-point win over the Suns on Saturday night.
Captain Mat Wundenberg starred in his 300th SBL match, with 17 rebounds and 15 points, winning 112-82.
Buccs coach Mark Heron said he was happy with the win, although he said it wasn’t “a great game by either side” and was happy to get the points for his skipper.
The Buccs were in control from the second quarter, and led by as many as 35 points at the two-minute mark in the final quarter.
Emerging players Charles Thurkle, Clay Dann, Dylan Myers and Jack Stone all got court time.
“It was great for them to head on the court and have a run around; it’s always difficult with 12 people to give everyone enough court time, ” he said.
“Some of the boys come up and said ‘sit me out for the last quarter and play some of the younger kids’.
“It’s good when the team’s about that.”
The Suns shot out of the blocks, leading by 11 points five minutes into the match, but the Buccs shot 22 to lead by two at the first break.
Star Bennie Lewis was again a focal point in offence, finishing with 29 points from his almost 36 minutes, although Heron said his shooting was a little off.
Heron said Wundenberg’s milestone was a fantastic achievement.
“All the boys wanted to win for him, ” he said.
“He probably came out a bit nervous, but that’s the way it goes sometimes.”
The Buccs again got through unscathed, good news for their double headers against Rockingham and Joondalup this weekend.
