Tourneur wins on Mad Brad, Carniolan in successful return

Dominic Tourneur made his long awaited return to Geraldton on Sunday and had a very good day at the office, collecting two big wins.

The former Geraldton local rode in eight of the nine races; and took Carniolan to victory in race 6, before backing that up with another win in the Purcher International Batavia Sprint in race 7.

Tourneur was pleased he was able to produce in front of some old mates, and was particularly pleased to get the result in the Batavia Sprint.

“It was a hectic finish and I was actually unsure on the line whether we had made it, ” Tourneur said.

“You don’t want to get too cock-a-hoop because if your name doesn’t come up it’s pretty disappointing, but I was quietly confident and thankfully we got there.

“The horse ran really well and it’s full credit to Ben (Pearce, trainer) for the condition Mad Brad was in.”

Originally from Perth, Tourneur lived in Geraldton for eight years before relocating to Adelaide in 2005. It was the first time he had returned to the region since.

Tourneur rode in four of the first five races and although collecting third in races 1 and 3, he was without a win to his name, before he saluted in race 6. “There was a fair bit of expectation on me I suppose and after not getting a win in the first four races I was starting to think it wasn’t my day, but fortunately I got the win on Carniolan in race 6.

“It was a pretty tough ride in that race as well, I had to carry a fair bit of weight, so to get the win was good and then backing it up in a big-ticket race was even better.”
