Air-conditioner fire leads to Durack evacuation

Fire fighters at the scene of the Durack Institute of Technology fire, which is believed to have broken out in an air conditioning unit in the hospital section (behind fire engine).

Durack Institute of Technology in Geraldton was evacuated today when a fire broke out in an air-conditioning unit in the hospitality section.

The incident caused about $20,000 damage.

No-one was hurt in the fire, which happened about 2pm.

Fire crews, some wearing breathing equipment, were quickly on the scene.

Even though only one building was affected by the fire, people in all buildings of the institute were required to evacuate, in what’s believed its first full-scale evacuation apart from drills.

One fire engine and a supporting vehicle were still at the scene with a police vehicle about 3pm.

Authorities gave the all-clear about 4pm.
