Aged care report gets funding

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman.

State Government funds of $250,000 were awarded last week to provide a feasibility and design report into creating a new Carnarvon residential aged care facility.

The funds were awarded through the Regional Grants Scheme and provided through the Gascoyne Development Commission.

The money will assess the viability and cost of constructing, maintaining and servicing the facility, and will go on planning, design, models and research into land tenure.

This comes after an initial study was completed recently, jointly funded by the GDC, Carnarvon Shire and the Gascoyne Memorial Foundation.

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the report would also investigate aged care within the Carnarvon Hospital, but did not say when the report would need to be completed by.

“Carnarvon and the Gascoyne region in general have had no residential aged care facility since 2007,” he said.

“Residents of the Gascoyne region are required to stay in Carnarvon hospital, which has minimal places, or move out of the region. This project will help the Carnarvon community plan for a new residential aged care facility in their town.

“The provision of localised aged care is important for regional communities, as it means that elderly residents can receive the care that they need, in a familiar environment and stay close to family.”
